About Bellagio

Beautiful, glamorous Bellagio sits at the peak of the inverted ‘Y’ of Lake Como, the perfect spot for lake views, and exploration — though it is an attraction in its own right! This gorgeous town is one of the most famous places on the lake, regularly referred to as the lake’s pearl, and some of the best places to stay in Bellagio are also some of the best known hotels on Lake Como. As you might have guessed, Bellagio’s accommodation options range from palatial palazzos, through seriously grand grande dames to traditional, family-friendly hotels that have been in the same family for hundreds of years.

if you love Bellagio’s bustle of holiday activity we recommend a quayside hotel or if narrow and raked streets, bustling with life and commerce grab your attention then the old town centre, around the main road, the Via Giuseppe Garibaldi, will be ideal. There are fantastic places to eat and drink, and to shop for the finer things, and this is where several of Bellagio’s famous churches are found too.

The town also boasts a number of famous villas and palazzos, and it's worth visiting their gardens, even if you can’t see the interiors. Its shoreline has some seriously beautiful beaches too, including the pebbled charmer, San Giovanni, and the more developed Lido di Bellagio.

As with all the top spots around Lake Como, this is an incedibly busy spot come July or August. So if you want to guarantee a room in one of the best places to stay in Bellagio, we recommend you get organised and book well ahead whatever the season!

The Best Places to Stay in Bellagio

For a Special Occasion

  • The Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni is a ‘properly’ grand Grand Hotel, complete with frescoes, murals, heavy gilt, vast fireplaces, marble pillars and huge chandeliers — sometimes all in the same room. It also boasts a ballroom, and a pool right above the water. In fact it’s got two pools, plus tennis courts and a spa. There’s also an incredible glass-walled restaurant, which has a Michelin star, and a terrace too, and the lake views from the restaurant allow guests to soak the beauty in almost constantly.

For Families

  • The Hotel Belvedere is wonderfully positioned, on a slight hill overlooking one of Bellagio’s marinas. The heated infinity pool and garden terraces all have wonderful lake views, as do some of the 64 rooms, suites and apartments. Decor is simple and contemporary, with parquet floors and neutral colours, but it’s the variation in size and shape of the rooms that we really like about them. Our Gurus also appreciate the personal touches that come from this being a family business that has survived since 1880.

For Great Value

  • The Hotel Florence offers affordable elegance in sophisticated Bellagio. The name is mirrored by the interiors, which have the colours and details of Renaissance Florence, but without all the flounces; the 27 rooms and suites are comfortably stylish. Our favourites are the ones with private balconies. The Hotel Florence has been in the same family for more than a hundred years and they’ve had a long time to hone their hospitality skills, which are really excellent. Expect gourmet cuisine in the restaurant, and on the wisteria-shaded terrace, and a personalised touch.

Prefer a Self-catering Apartment or villa?

  • Sometimes a villa or apartment is the best option if you're travelling in a larger group, so if you decide that you'd prefer a self catering option, check out our online booking partner, booking.com for some inspiration.

Travel Information

  • Bellagio is between international airports: Milan’s Linate, Malpensa and Bergamo Airport are about an hour and a quarter away by road, or around an hour and 45minutes by train and ferry, while Brescia-Montichiari and Verona-Villafranca are both about two hours drive, or four and a half on the train via Milan.
  • If you want to hire a car — which we strongly advise if you’re staying on Lake Como and want to explore the wider area — we recommend you visit our online partner, Rentalcars.
  • Lake Como has a milder climate than its surrounds, its great body of water helps regulate the temperature, and allows for sub-tropical plants like grapevines and olive trees to grow throughout the year. In winter it does get chilly, and in summer it can be humid, but generally it has some of the best weather conditions in Europe. April through to October are the busiest months for visitors, warm and sunny, and perfect for a lake break. The water even heats up during summer, and can get to 20°C come July! So if you are visiting at this time it’s worth booking as much as you can in advance.
